[Rural, Agricultural and Livestock News = Reporter Shim Mi-jin] The Rural Development Administration is moving forward with high-value-added processing and industrialization of domestic oils, leading with a new sesame variety that contains approximately 3 times more lignans than foreign and general varieties, and a new perilla variety with enhanced omega-3 content. As demand for plant-based oils increases and the K-Food craze expands the overseas market presence of traditional Korean oils, the strategy is to differentiate from foreign products with functionally enhanced domestic raw materials while simultaneously increasing farm income and export competitiveness. To this end, the Rural Development Administration has developed new sesame varieties 'Seulgi' and 'Roum' with increased lignans content, and new perilla varieties 'Jian' with increased alpha-linolenic acid content, a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid.
