[Nongsuchuksan Shinmun = Reporter Shim Mi-jin] The agricultural and forestry sectors are preparing for resource loss caused by disasters or accidents by redundantly preserving plant genetic resources held by each other. In addition, by linking genetic resource information, they aim to expand utilization, such as the breeding of new varieties and the development of green bio-materials. The National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (NIAS) under the Rural Development Administration (Administrator Lee Seung-don) signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding for the Safe Redundant Preservation of Plant Genetic Resources’ with the Korea Arboretum and Garden Management Center under the Korea Forest Service at the National Sejong Arboretum on the 11th. The two institutions have been cooperating for the safe preservation of plant genetic resources since 2020. The Korea Arboretum and Garden Management Center will redundantly preserve 194,000 resources comprising 473 plant species held by the Agricultural Genetic Resources Center of NIAS.
